The appreciation for plants and natural landscapes led her way to be a landscape designer. She loves to experience landscapes all over the world, she has traveled Japan, Spain, Italy and lived in France for a year. She is fascinated by the beauty and delicacy of traditional gardens, in which she developed a passion for carefully managed environment and fine crafted design work that speaks to its natural and cultural surroundings. Erosion, flooding, high winds—we all know that building by the sea is not for the faint of heart.

Beyond achieving that milestone, which was great in and of itself, what struck me most about that evening was the 260 something people gathered in that hall. There, celebrating right along with me, were design and building professionals who were also commemorating 25 and 30 years in business, many whose firms were experiencing a changing of the guard and ushering in the next generation of ownership. Over time, Boston Design Guide has grown from a 144-page first edition to a 300+ page comprehensive resource trusted by professionals and homeowners alike. About ten years ago, we embraced the digital era, expanding beyond our yearly coffee table-worthy printed edition onto the web.

At DGLA, Maureen brings multi-faceted experience and grace to the day-to-day business operation and the firm’s public relations. Connecting all the dots, she provides administrative support to Dan and the DGLA team. Dan graduated magna cum laude from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, in 1983 with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Design, and received his Master of Landscape Architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design in 1986. During the fall semester of 2020, Dan was selected as a guest professor to teach the residential design studio at UMass Amherst. There is no visitor parking in the front courtyard or on the south side of the building.

After 16-plus years in the biz, this Boston firm is still growing in all the right ways. In the past year alone, the team challenged itself with a passive-house retrofit in Somerville, plus a historically sensitive remodel of a Brookline Victorian, complete with a 19th-century bar top for the kitchen island and on-trend green cabinetry. Launched by editor and publisher Melanie Perillo in 1997, Boston Design Guide has become a trusted and comprehensive resource that reflects the “best of the best” in the home industry.

Jordan grew up in southern New Hampshire, where she started a small vegetable farm with her family and hosted a farm stand for their community. Between working with the land on her family farm and exploring New England landscapes, she developed a passion and appreciation for the outdoors. At DGLA, Patrick specializes in conveying innovative design ideas through process graphics, illustrative schematic drawings, and detailed construction documentation.

Ali CampbellCreative Manager

As a Site Manager/ Stone and Brick Mason, Joseph developed his expertise in landscape construction, creating and designing custom stonework for exclusive properties across New England. If hardscaping is an art form, think of these Charlestown-based experts as the Monets of local landscape masonry. Throughout her studies at Northeastern University, Ali held creative roles at several Boston-based companies and gained experience in strategic visual storytelling for brands. She co-founded a creative studio and went on to independently lead another, providing brand consultancy, design, and photography for clients around Boston as well as internationally. An avid traveler, Ali has lived and worked on creative projects throughout Central and South America, Europe, and Africa. Her travels, both internationally and locally, have contributed to her interest in the relationship between landscapes and culture.

Of course, the inventory itself is just as eye-catching; gorgeous vignettes featuring contemporary furniture by designers like Nendo and Marcio Kogan make the shopping experience truly memorable. Sam Kachmar’s catalog of renovations and new builds is objectively beautiful, but we’re particularly taken with its depth and range. We collaborate with leading architects and interior designers, and rely on the finest builders and craftspeople to help make our designs become a reality. Caroline earned her master’s degree in Landscape Architecture from the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry in 2020 and soon after joined the team at DGLA.

Their inventory is edgy, too, from Warhol-meets-Arbus images by Hungarian digital photographer Flora Borsi to ethereal, abstract sculptures by Jeremy Holmes. These teams won’t just dream up plans for your new home; they’ll flawlessly execute them from start to finish. And the team’s craftsmanship speaks for itself. For proof, consider the three-story modern masterpiece they built alongside Flavin Architects with glass walls and galvanized-steel detailing. Born and raised in the Boston area, Ali grew up gardening with her grandfather and exploring New England, sparking a lifelong interest in plants and nature. Inspired by the many artists in her family, Ali was drawn to creative pursuits from an early age. This, in combination with her love for exploration, led her to a career in photography and design.

Dan grew up in a suburb of Boston on a generous property where he enjoyed the outdoors, acquired a strong work ethic, and learned the role of gardening at a residential scale. During excursions throughout New England and beyond, he developed an appreciation for natural conservation and preservation of the built landscape. While embracing DGLA’s underlying design philosophies, Dan seeks to create landscapes as a series of spaces from which you can enjoy the natural world with limited intrusion. At DGLA Peter excels at all facets of project management, including schematic design development, creation of custom construction detailing, planting design, and on-site construction administration. As a project manager, Peter has had the opportunity to collaborate on some of New England’s premier properties, and has been fortunate to work with many of the region’s finest architects and craftspeople.

Take, for instance, a stunning home in Kingston where an outdoor kitchen and dining area are just the tip of the iceberg in a tree-laden yard that also includes a raised-beam swimming hole and a custom arbor. Re-create the looks from interior designer Gina Baran’s most coveted projects with curated items from her Newbury boutique, Abode Shoppe. The brand’s recent refresh is all about delivering the firm’s aesthetic without having to pay the design fee that comes with it, Baran says. Shopping Abode’s offerings, such as organic cotton blankets from Turkey and handmade terra cotta bowls, just might be the easiest way to decorate. In what proved to be a banner year for local showroom openings, the debut of this luxury Italian brand’s first-ever Boston store has us truly buzzing. Located on Stuart Street, the space stuns with towering floor-to-ceiling windows and a sleek, double-sided fireplace designed just for this location.

— TIMELESS LANDSCAPES —

DGLA’s collaborations are underscored by a shared love of the natural world, evidenced further in partnership with other design professionals, to achieve sustainable and enduring landscapes. DGLA is always looking for talented, passionate individuals who have an eye for details and a willingness to collaborate. DGLA offers a creative, friendly, dynamic work environment with opportunities to become an integral part of a growing team. At DGLA, you can expect to work on inspiring landscapes, while partnering with respected design professionals and skilled craftsman in the pursuit of a shared vision.

She has worked with Dan and the team for many years, providing administrative support with a focus on the financial aspects of the firm, as well as assisting with day-to-day business operations. While her husband Dan was establishing his practice, Maureen’s career led her to the Massachusetts Water Resource Authority (MWRA) where she was hired to establish its Central Laboratory, which entailed everything from hiring staff to outfitting the lab. Maureen enjoyed watching DGLA evolve as Dan’s passion for thoughtful design and commitment to meeting client needs became increasingly well known in New England. Subsequently, Maureen’s dedication to the environment and hands-on management skills merged naturally to administering DGLA on a regular basis. Prior to joining DGLA in 2022, Wyatt had always had a love for designing and creating things. Growing up in an artistic household, he honed his skills in hand carving wooden sculptures as a hobby and side job.

Lulu has always gravitated toward more visual subjects and had a fascination with building things. From the beginning it would be a career in design. While pursuing a degree in fashion design, Lulu was introduced to Landscape Architecture.

Want to take the plunge into pool ownership? Enlist the experts at this Chelmsford-based firm. The company has showed off its meticulous building skills on some of the splashiest custom swimming holes around, incorporating luxe adds-on such as waterfalls and built-in spas with equal aplomb. Plus, with a handy roster of maintenance services covering equipment upgrades, safety-cover installation, and more, the team makes sure the hardest part of managing your new summertime retreat is convincing the kids to climb out of it at the end of the day. There’s lots to love about a Patrick Planeta project, but what strikes us the most is the interior designer’s unwavering ability to infuse warmth into his sophisticated schemes.
